Quick answer. Fukuoka Airport is one of the most convenient in the world: the subway from the domestic terminal reaches Hakata Station in about five minutes for around ¥260, payable with Suica or any national IC card. The international terminal is across the runway, linked by a free shuttle bus and direct buses to Hakata. For yen, use a Seven Bank machine, in both terminals, rather than an ordinary Japanese bank ATM that may reject your card. Withdraw before evening: Fukuoka's famous yatai food stalls are nearly all cash only. Japan has no Bank of America Global ATM Alliance partner.
Where to get Japanese Yen at FUK
At Fukuoka, the machine is the decision. Seven Bank and Japan Post give the network rate; most other Japanese bank ATMs refuse foreign cards. The figures below assume the yen equivalent of $100.
| Option | Where | Markup | Total Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seven Bank ATM (7-Eleven) on a no-FX-fee card | Domestic and international terminals | Network rate, small operator fee | ~$100-101 |
| Japan Post Bank ATM | Terminal and post offices in town | Network rate, small operator fee | ~$100-101 |
| Regular Japanese bank ATM | Terminal | Often rejects foreign cards | May not work at all |
| Airport exchange counter | International arrivals | Several percent off the network rate | ~$104-108 |
| Accepting 'charge in USD' at any machine | Anywhere | +5-10% conversion markup | ~$105-110 |
Seven Bank machines at Fukuoka (FUK), and the five-minute subway
Fukuoka Airport sits almost inside the city, which is why its flights skim the rooftops. It has two separate buildings: the domestic terminal, rebuilt in recent years, with a subway station underneath, and the international terminal on the far side of the runway, with flights to Seoul, Busan, Taipei, Shanghai and beyond. The two are linked by a free shuttle bus. Seven Bank machines are in both terminals, and Japan Post Bank machines are available too. The yen matters here more than in Tokyo, as our Fukuoka money guide explains: the yatai along the Naka river and in Tenjin rarely take cards, and many ramen shops sell tickets from cash machines.
Domestic terminal
ANA, JAL, Skymark, Peach and other domestic carriers
Seven Bank machines are in the public areas of the terminal. The Fukuoka Airport subway station is directly below, and ticket machines take cash; IC cards can be tapped straight at the gate.
International terminal
Flights from Korea, Taiwan, China, Southeast Asia and other international routes
A Seven Bank machine and exchange counters are in arrivals. Use the machine. Then take the free shuttle bus to the domestic terminal for the subway, or a direct bus to Hakata Station, which is quicker with luggage.
Do you actually need cash at Fukuoka (FUK)?
Not to reach the city, which is five minutes away by subway. You will need it for the evening:
Subway to Hakata Station (around ¥260): From the domestic terminal, two stops and about five minutes; IC cards at the gate, and the line continues to Tenjin.
Free shuttle between terminals (free): Every few minutes; about 15 minutes around the runway.
Direct bus from the international terminal to Hakata (a few hundred yen): About 15-20 minutes; IC cards accepted.
Taxi to Hakata or Tenjin (roughly ¥1,500-2,500): Short and reasonably priced; most taxis take cards and IC cards.
⚠ DCC trap. When the ATM or terminal asks if you want to be charged in your home currency instead of the local currency, always decline and choose the local currency. Accepting locks in a 3-13 percent markup that your no-FX-fee card cannot undo. Full DCC explainer →
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need cash to get from Fukuoka (FUK) to Fukuoka?
No. The subway and buses take IC cards, and taxis mostly take cards. You will need yen for the yatai stalls and ramen ticket machines in the evening, so withdraw at the airport or a 7-Eleven in town.
Can I order Japanese Yen before flying?
Rarely needed. Seven Bank machines at both terminals and in every 7-Eleven in Fukuoka give yen at the network rate. CEI Currency Exchange ships yen to a US address in 2-5 days if you want notes before you fly.
How do I get from the international terminal to the domestic terminal at Fukuoka?
By the free shuttle bus, which runs every few minutes and takes about 15 minutes around the runway. If you are heading into the city, a direct bus from the international terminal to Hakata Station is often quicker than changing to the subway.
Can I take a ferry from Fukuoka to Korea?
Yes. High-speed ferries and overnight ferries sail from Hakata port to Busan. Tickets are sold by card online and at the port. Korea uses the won, and our Busan money guide covers what to expect on arrival.
Do Fukuoka yatai take credit cards?
A few now do, but most yatai stalls are still cash only. Budget 2,000 to 4,000 yen a person for an evening of ramen, yakitori and a drink or two, and withdraw at the airport or a 7-Eleven before you go.
