Less than anywhere else in India, which brings its own problem. Bengaluru, India's tech capital, is the country's most cashless city, and the way it went cashless is UPI, the instant mobile payment system linked to Indian bank accounts. A visitor with a foreign card cannot use it directly. So the chai stall, the darshini counter and the auto driver, who would rather not handle notes, may still need either cash or a QR scan you cannot do. Cards work well at the hotels, malls, restaurants and breweries. Carry ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 a day for the rest. The India money guide covers UPI nationally.
Where You Will Need Cash (or UPI)
Autos hailed on the street or through Namma Yatri. Darshini restaurants, the stand-up South Indian breakfast counters. Street food and fruit sellers. Small shops in Commercial Street, Chickpet and the markets. Temple donations and tips.
Where Cards Work Fine
Hotels. Malls such as UB City, Phoenix Marketcity and Orion. Breweries, pubs and restaurants in Indiranagar, Koramangala and on Church Street. Uber and Ola through the app. Metro ticket counters.
Paying Like a Local Without an Indian Bank Account
Why UPI matters here. In Bengaluru even the coconut seller has a printed QR code. UPI payments come straight out of an Indian bank account, so locals rarely carry cash, and small vendors are not used to giving change for a ₹500 note.
UPI One World. To include visitors, India allows foreign travellers a prepaid UPI wallet, known as UPI One World, issued through a handful of apps and at some airport counters after a passport and visa check. You load it with a foreign card and then scan QR codes like a local. It works, but the load carries a fee or an exchange margin, and unused balances can be awkward to refund. Treat it as a convenience for a long stay, not a way to save money.
The simple approach. For a short visit, use a no-foreign-fee card wherever cards are taken, and carry small notes, ₹10, ₹20, ₹50 and ₹100, for the rest. Break ₹500 notes at hotels, malls and supermarkets.
Autos, Namma Yatri and the Meter
The meter, in theory. Bengaluru's autos are supposed to run on the meter, and the government sets the fare. In practice, drivers often quote a flat price or ask for "meter plus" ₹20 or ₹30, more at night or in the rain.
Namma Yatri. The city's driver-owned ride app, Namma Yatri, charges drivers a small subscription instead of a commission, and shows a fare before you book. Payment goes directly to the driver, in cash or UPI, so you still need notes. Uber, Ola and Rapido autos and cabs are also available, with card payment in the app for cabs.
Traffic. Bengaluru's traffic is infamous. A five-kilometre ride can take 45 minutes at rush hour, so pick the metro for anything along its lines.
The Namma Metro
The network. The Namma Metro's Purple line runs east to west through MG Road and Majestic, the Green line north to south, and the newer Yellow line south-east towards Electronic City. Fares are low, roughly ₹10 to ₹60.
Tickets. Buy a token or a paper QR ticket at the station counter or machine, by cash or card, or a QR ticket through the metro's app. A smart card gives a small discount, and the National Common Mobility Card works on the system. Bags are scanned at the entrance.
The airport. There is no metro to the airport yet; a line is under construction. Use the Vayu Vajra bus, an app cab or a taxi.
Breweries, Pubs and the Service Charge
India's pub city. Bengaluru has more microbreweries than any other Indian city, clustered in Indiranagar, Koramangala and along Church Street and the old MG Road and Brigade Road area. A pint of house beer costs roughly ₹300 to ₹500, plus tax.
The service charge. Many bills add a service charge of 5 to 10 percent on top of the tax. Under India's consumer protection guidelines it is voluntary: restaurants may not add it automatically or refuse service if you decline, and the courts have backed the consumer. If you want to tip the staff directly instead, ask for it to be taken off.
Last orders. Bars close by about 1 am, and earlier on some nights, and dry days around elections and some festivals close them entirely. Liquor shop prices are fixed by the state.
Darshinis, Markets and Shopping
Darshinis. Bengaluru's stand-up restaurants serve idli, vada and dosa in minutes, and a breakfast costs ₹50 to ₹120. You pay at the counter first, in cash or UPI, and collect your food with the token. Famous names such as Vidyarthi Bhavan and MTR draw queues and take cards at the sit-down sections.
Markets. Commercial Street for clothes and shoes, Chickpet for silk saris and wholesale, and KR Market for flowers at dawn. Bargaining is expected in the street stalls; fixed-price shops take cards.
Mysore silk and sandalwood. The government-run Cauvery Emporium on MG Road sells Karnataka crafts at fixed prices and takes cards, a useful benchmark before you buy elsewhere.
ATMs in Bengaluru

SBI
HDFC Bank
ICICI Bank
Axis BankATM Locations
Machines are everywhere: MG Road, Brigade Road, Indiranagar's 100 Feet Road, Koramangala, Whitefield and every mall. Canara Bank, headquartered in Bengaluru, has one of the largest networks alongside SBI and HDFC. Each withdrawal is capped, and India has no Bank of America Global ATM Alliance partner. Arriving by air, our Bengaluru airport guide covers the machines in arrivals.
⚠ Choose Rupees at the Mall Terminal
Card terminals at hotels and big shops sometimes offer to charge your card in dollars. Choose rupees. Our DCC explainer shows what the "convert to dollars" screen really costs.
The Airport Run
A long way north. Kempegowda International Airport is at Devanahalli, about 35 to 40 kilometres north of the city centre. Allow up to two hours in traffic, more to the tech parks in the south and east.
The options. The BMTC Vayu Vajra air-conditioned buses run to most parts of the city for roughly ₹250 to ₹400, paid by cash, card or UPI on board. A taxi or app cab costs roughly ₹900 to ₹1,500, plus tolls and an airport pick-up fee. The airport's own taxi rank uses metered taxis with a fixed airport surcharge.
Tipping in Bengaluru
Tip directly if you have declined the service charge, around 5 to 10 percent. Otherwise round up. Auto drivers do not expect a tip beyond the agreed fare, and darshini staff not at all. Hotel porters get ₹50 to ₹100.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need cash in Bengaluru?
Less than anywhere else in India, but yes. Bengaluru runs on UPI, which foreign visitors cannot use with a home bank card. Cards work at hotels, malls, restaurants and breweries. Autos, darshini restaurants, street food and small shops often take only cash or UPI. Carry 1,000 to 2,000 rupees a day.
Can foreign tourists use UPI in Bengaluru?
Not with a foreign bank account. India offers foreign visitors prepaid UPI wallets, branded UPI One World, which you top up with a foreign card and then use to scan the QR codes everywhere. They are available through a few apps and at some airport counters, and the top-up carries a fee or a markup. Check what it costs before loading a large amount.
How do I get from Bengaluru airport to the city?
Kempegowda International Airport is about 35 to 40 kilometres north of the centre. A taxi or app cab costs roughly 900 to 1,500 rupees plus tolls, and takes 45 minutes to two hours depending on traffic. The BMTC Vayu Vajra air-conditioned buses run to many parts of the city for a few hundred rupees.
Do I have to pay the service charge in Bengaluru restaurants?
No. Under India's consumer protection guidelines, a service charge on a restaurant bill is voluntary, and restaurants may not add it by default or refuse service if you decline. Many pubs and breweries still print it on the bill, usually 5 to 10 percent. Ask for it to be removed if you prefer to tip directly.
How do I pay for the Namma Metro?
Buy a token or a QR ticket at the station, by cash or card, or a QR ticket through the metro app or WhatsApp. Regular users buy a smart card, and the National Common Mobility Card works on the network. Fares are low, typically 10 to 60 rupees.
Which ATMs should I use in Bengaluru?
Bank machines from SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis and Canara Bank, which is headquartered in Bengaluru, are everywhere: MG Road, Brigade Road, Indiranagar, Koramangala and the malls. Each withdrawal is capped. Always choose rupees, not dollars.
