Do You Need Cash in Colombo?

Yes, for many everyday transactions. Colombo is more card-friendly than the rest of Sri Lanka, but tuk-tuks, Pettah Market, street food vendors, and smaller shops still operate on cash. Hotels, shopping malls, and modern restaurants accept cards. Carry at least LKR 3,000–5,000 (about $10–16) when heading out.

Airport to city center: LKR 3,000–5,000 by metered tuk-tuk or PickMe.

Sri Lanka's main ride-hailing app, similar to Uber (which does not operate here). Works well in Colombo with good availability for tuk-tuks and cars. Card payment through the app or cash to the driver. Download before you arrive. Also available for food delivery. The most hassle-free transport option for tourists.

Trains

Colombo Fort Station is the main hub. Trains to Mount Lavinia (LKR 20–40, 30 min), Galle (LKR 180–600, 2.5 hours along the coast), and Kandy (LKR 200–600, 2.5 hours through tea country). Tickets: buy at the station counter (cash). First class reserved seats can be booked online. The coastal line south and the hill country line to Kandy are two of Asia's most scenic train rides.

City Buses

Colombo has an extensive bus network. Fares are LKR 15–50 depending on distance (cash to the conductor). Buses are frequent but can be extremely crowded during rush hours. Useful for getting between major areas on a budget. Route numbers are displayed on the front of the bus.
