Barely. Dubai is one of the most card-friendly cities in the world. Contactless payments are the norm at malls, restaurants, taxis, and attractions. Cash is mainly needed at the traditional souks in Deira and some smaller restaurants in older neighborhoods. The AED is pegged to USD at 3.67:1.
Where You Might Need Cash
Gold Souk and Spice Souk in Deira (cash helps with haggling). Abra water taxis across Dubai Creek (AED 1). Small restaurants in Karama and old Deira. Tipping: AED 5–10 for hotel porters, valet parking, and exceptional service. Desert safari guides appreciate cash tips.
Paying by Card in Dubai
Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost everywhere, including taxis. Amex works at hotels, malls, and larger restaurants. Contactless payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay) are the norm.
Downtown Dubai & Burj Khalifa
The Dubai Mall (1,200+ shops), Burj Khalifa observation deck, Dubai Fountain, and every restaurant in the area accept cards. The Dubai Mall food court uses card payments. The Dubai Opera accepts cards. This is the most tourist-heavy area of Dubai and completely cashless-friendly. Even the ice rink and aquarium inside the mall take contactless.
Dubai Marina & JBR
The Marina Walk restaurants, JBR Beach restaurants, and The Walk at JBR shops all accept cards. Beach activities (jet skiing, parasailing) increasingly accept cards, though some operators prefer cash. Marina Mall is fully card-friendly. Rooftop bars and dinner cruises accept cards. The tram connecting the Marina to the Metro accepts Nol cards.
Palm Jumeirah
Atlantis The Palm, Nakheel Mall, and every resort restaurant accept cards. The Aquaventure Waterpark accepts cards. Beach clubs on the Palm accept cards (minimum spends are common). This is a luxury-focused area where cash is essentially unnecessary. The Palm Monorail accepts Nol cards.
Deira & the Souks
The traditional heart of Dubai. The Gold Souk shops accept cards for larger gold purchases but prefer cash for bargaining. The Spice Souk is almost entirely cash. Small restaurants in Deira serving Indian, Pakistani, and Filipino food are cash-preferred. The larger shops on Al Rigga Street accept cards. Bring AED 200–500 for souk exploration.
Bur Dubai & Karama
The older part of Dubai with budget restaurants and shops. The Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood's cafes and galleries accept cards. Meena Bazaar shops accept cards for larger purchases but prefer cash for small items. Karama's famous "copy market" is entirely cash. The budget Indian and Pakistani restaurants that make this area a food destination are mostly cash-preferred.
DIFC & Business Bay
The financial district and surrounding business area. Every restaurant, bar, and shop accepts cards. Gate Village galleries accept cards. The restaurants along the Dubai Water Canal in Business Bay are all card-friendly. This area has some of Dubai's best cocktail bars and upscale dining, all card-accepting. After-work happy hours are popular here.
Dubai Creek & Festival City
Dubai Festival City Mall is fully card-friendly. Abra (traditional wooden boat) rides across Dubai Creek cost AED 1–2 and are cash only (one of the few cash-only experiences in modern Dubai). The creek-side restaurants on the Deira and Bur Dubai banks are mixed on card acceptance. The Dubai Frame attraction accepts cards.
Where to Exchange Money
Al Ansari & UAE Exchange
Al Ansari Exchange and UAE Exchange are licensed money changers with branches in every mall and most residential areas. Rates are competitive with no commission. They offer better rates than hotel desks and airport booths. Open long hours, including weekends. Since the AED is pegged to USD, the exchange rate is predictable and stable (AED 3.67 = $1).
ATMs
Emirates NBD ATMs are the most common and do not charge operator fees for foreign cards. Found in every mall, metro station, and on most commercial streets. ADCB and FAB ATMs also work with foreign cards. Maximum withdrawal is typically AED 5,000–10,000 per transaction. Since Dubai is so card-friendly, many visitors never use an ATM at all.
Emirates NBDPaying for Transport
Dubai Metro
Buy a Nol Card at any metro station (AED 25 Silver card including AED 19 credit). Tap at entry and exit gates. The metro does not accept contactless bank cards at gates. Fares range from AED 3–8.50 depending on zones. The Red Line connects the airport to Downtown, Dubai Mall, and Dubai Marina. The Gold Class cabin (front car) costs double but is quieter.
Taxis
Dubai taxis (operated by RTA) are clean, metered, and accept credit cards via the in-car terminal. Flag fall is AED 12 (AED 25 from the airport). A ride from Downtown to Dubai Marina costs about AED 40–60. Careem (owned by Uber) is the dominant ride-hailing app and accepts card payment. Uber also operates. Both are reliable and similarly priced to taxis.
Abra (Water Taxi)
The traditional wooden abras crossing Dubai Creek cost AED 1–2, cash only. This is one of the cheapest and most authentic experiences in Dubai. Boats depart when full (a few minutes wait) and take about 5 minutes to cross. Routes connect Bur Dubai to Deira. Have small coins ready.
Airport to City
Dubai Metro Red Line from DXB Terminal 1 or 3 to Downtown or Marina takes 30–50 minutes and costs AED 5–8.50 (Nol card). Taxis from the airport cost AED 60–100 to Downtown, AED 100–130 to Marina (card accepted). Careem/Uber pickups are available. The metro is fastest for Downtown; taxis are better for Marina or JBR during peak hours.

Abu Dhabi (1.5 hours by bus or car)
Same currency (AED), same card acceptance. Buses from Al Ghubaiba station cost AED 25 (Nol card). The Louvre Abu Dhabi costs AED 63 (card at ticket office). Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is free (modest dress required). Yas Island (Ferrari World, Warner Bros World) accepts cards for everything. Abu Dhabi is equally card-friendly as Dubai.
Desert Safari
Book online with a card through operators or your hotel. Prices range from AED 150–500 ($41–136) depending on the experience (standard dune bashing vs. premium overnight camp). Everything is included in the package: transport, activities, dinner, entertainment. Tip the driver AED 20–50 in cash. No other cash needed.
Oman (Musandam, 2 hours by car)
The Musandam Peninsula is an Omani exclave reachable from Dubai. You need your passport and may need an Omani visa. Organized dhow cruise tours can be booked with card through Dubai operators. Oman uses the Omani Rial (OMR), not AED. Some Musandam tour operators accept AED, but at a poor rate. ATMs in Khasab dispense OMR. Card acceptance at Musandam restaurants is limited, so bring cash.
