Do You Need Cash in Luang Prabang?

Absolutely. Luang Prabang is one of Southeast Asia's most cash-dependent tourist towns. The night market, tuk-tuks, boat operators, temples, and the vast majority of restaurants operate on cash. Only a handful of upscale hotels and tourist-facing restaurants accept cards. Three currencies circulate: Lao kip (the official currency), US dollars (widely accepted for larger purchases), and Thai baht (accepted at some businesses near the border). Carry at least LAK 200,000–500,000 (about $9–23) or the equivalent in USD when heading out.

Where You Will Need Cash

Night market on Sisavangvong Road. Morning market (Talat Phousi) for local food. Tuk-tuks and songthaews. Boat trips on the Mekong. Kuang Si Falls entry and food stalls. Temple donations.
