Very little. Switzerland is one of Europe's most card-friendly countries, and Lucerne is no exception. Contactless payments work at virtually every restaurant, shop, museum, mountain railway, boat cruise, and even many market stalls. You may need CHF 20–30 for some smaller market vendors, street performers, public restrooms, and tips.
Where You Will Need Cash
Some smaller market stalls at the weekly markets. Public restrooms (CHF 1–2). Buskers and street performers. Some mountain huts on hiking trails above the tree line. Tipping (cash is appreciated though not expected). Vending machines at older train platforms (most new ones accept cards).
Where Cards Work Fine

Amex is accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, and department stores. Important: Switzerland uses Swiss Francs (CHF), not euros. Some tourist businesses accept euros but give change in CHF at an unfavorable rate. Always pay in CHF.
Altstadt (Old Town)
Lucerne's compact medieval old town on both sides of the Reuss river. The Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge) is free to walk across. Kapellgasse and Weggisgasse have restaurants, cafes, and souvenir shops that all accept cards. The Musegg Wall (free, towers open in summer) overlooks the town. Löwendenkmal (Lion Monument, free). Restaurants on Weinmarkt and Kornmarkt plazas all accept cards.
Lakefront & Schweizerhofquai
The elegant lakefront promenade along Lake Lucerne. SGV boat cruises depart from pier 1 (card at ticket offices). Hotels along Schweizerhofquai and Nationalquai accept cards. The KKL (Culture and Convention Centre) by Jean Nouvel accepts cards. Restaurants and cafes along the waterfront all accept cards. The lake cruise to Vitznau (for Rigi) or Alpnachstad (for Pilatus) costs CHF 25–40 each way (card, or free with Swiss Travel Pass).
Hertensteinstrasse & Shopping
Lucerne's main shopping street. Bucherer (watches and jewelry, card accepted). Globus department store (card accepted). Swiss watch shops (card, obviously). Coop and Migros supermarkets accept cards including contactless. Cafes and restaurants along this street all accept cards. Manor department store has a food hall on the top floor (card accepted).
Swiss Transport Museum
Switzerland's most-visited museum is in the Verkehrshaus area east of the center. Swiss Transport Museum (CHF 36, card accepted). The Planetarium (CHF 18, card accepted) and Swiss Chocolate Adventure (CHF 15, card accepted) are in the same complex. The on-site restaurant accepts cards. Reach it by bus 6, 8, or 24 from the station (VBL ticket, card at machine).
Mountain Summits (Pilatus, Rigi)
The mountain railway stations and summit restaurants all accept cards. Pilatus summit restaurant and hotel accept cards. Rigi Kulm summit restaurant accepts cards. The cable cars, cog railways, and gondolas all have card-enabled ticket offices. Even the small kiosks at intermediate stations accept cards. Switzerland's mountain tourism infrastructure is world-class, including payments.
Mountain Excursions: What They Cost
Lucerne's mountain excursions are spectacular but expensive. The Swiss Travel Pass offsets much of the cost.
Mount Pilatus Golden Round Trip
Lucerne's signature excursion. Boat from Lucerne to Alpnachstad (1 hour), cog railway (the world's steepest, 30 minutes) to the summit (2,132m), then cable car and gondola down to Kriens, bus back to Lucerne. Total: CHF 75.60 (card accepted at every step). Free with the Swiss Travel Pass. The summit has a restaurant, hotel, and viewing terrace (all card-friendly). One of Switzerland's best day experiences.
Mount Rigi
The "Queen of the Mountains." Boat from Lucerne to Vitznau (1 hour), cog railway to Rigi Kulm summit (1,798m). Return via cable car to Weggis, boat back. Total: CHF 68–78 (card accepted). Free with Swiss Travel Pass. The summit restaurant and lower Alpine cheese dairy accept cards. Gentler than Pilatus, with panoramic views of the Alps and lakes.
Mount Titlis (day trip from Lucerne)
The highest excursion from Lucerne. Train to Engelberg (45 minutes, CHF 20, card at machine), then Titlis Rotair rotating cable car to the glacier (3,238m). Cable car return costs CHF 96 (card at station). 50% off with Swiss Travel Pass. The Cliff Walk suspension bridge (free) and glacier cave are at the top. Summit restaurant accepts cards. A full-day adventure.
ATMs in Lucerne
For Switzerland-wide ATM advice and DCC warnings, see the Switzerland guide.
Look for these logos. Swiss bank ATMs offer fair-rate withdrawals for foreign cards.
UBS
PostFinanceATM Locations
Bahnhof (train station): UBS and PostFinance ATMs inside the station. Pilatusstrasse: Banks south of the station. Hertensteinstrasse: Banks along the shopping street. Schweizerhofquai: ATMs near the lakefront hotels. Lucerne is compact and ATMs are within a 5-minute walk anywhere in the center.
⚠ Always Pay in Swiss Francs
Some tourist shops and restaurants offer to charge you in euros or USD. Always decline and pay in CHF. Their conversion rate will be 5–10% worse than your card's rate. At ATMs, always choose to be charged in CHF, not your home currency. This avoids DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion) markups.
Paying for VBL Buses, Trains & Lake Cruises
VBL Buses
Lucerne's VBL bus system covers the city and suburbs. A single ticket costs CHF 2.50. A day pass costs CHF 5. Buy at machines (card accepted) or on the SBB Mobile app (credit card). The Swiss Travel Pass includes all VBL transport. The Lucerne Visitor Card (free from your hotel) includes unlimited local transport during your stay. Lucerne is walkable, so most visitors only use buses for the Transport Museum or Kriens.
Lake Cruises (SGV)
The SGV operates boat cruises on Lake Lucerne. A panoramic cruise costs CHF 48 (1 hour, card at pier). Longer cruises to Vitznau (for Rigi) or Alpnachstad (for Pilatus) cost CHF 25–40 each way. Free with Swiss Travel Pass. Card accepted at all ticket offices and onboard for food and drinks. The historic paddle steamers are a highlight.
SBB Trains
Lucerne is a major rail hub. Trains to Zurich (50 minutes, CHF 25), Interlaken (2 hours, CHF 33 via the Golden Pass route), and Engelberg (45 minutes, CHF 20) are all bookable by card at SBB machines, online, or on the SBB Mobile app. The Swiss Travel Pass covers all standard train travel.
Tipping in Lucerne
The Switzerland guide covers Swiss tipping norms. Service is included in all Swiss restaurant bills by law. Tipping is not expected but appreciated. Rounding up or leaving CHF 2–5 at a sit-down meal is a kind gesture. Mountain guides: CHF 10–20. Boat crew: not expected. Taxi drivers: round up by CHF 1–2. Hotel porters: CHF 2–5 per bag. Tip in cash if you do tip.
