Do You Need Cash in Marrakech?

Yes, a lot. Marrakech is a cash-first city. The Medina, souks, Jemaa el-Fna food stalls, taxis, and most traditional businesses operate on dirhams cash. Card acceptance is limited to Gueliz, upscale restaurants, hotels, and resort properties. Carry MAD 500–1,000 ($50–100) at all times.

Where You Will Need Cash

Souks (all bargaining is cash). Jemaa el-Fna food stalls, juice vendors, performers. Taxis (negotiate fare first, cash only). Hammams (public baths). Tips: riad staff, restaurant servers, guides, hammam attendants, unsolicited "helpers." Riads (some prefer cash payment even for rooms). Atlas Mountains and all day trips outside Marrakech.

Where Cards Work Fine

Gueliz restaurants and shops (the modern district). Majorelle Garden ticket office. Resort hotels (La Palmeraie area). Carrefour supermarket. Upscale Medina boutiques near Dar el Bacha. Marrakech's cash dependence is similar to Cairo.

Paying by Card in Marrakech

Visa works more widely than Mastercard. Card acceptance is limited to Gueliz, hotels, and upscale restaurants.

Cash recommended

Medina & Souks

The ancient walled city and its labyrinthine souks are almost entirely cash. Leather goods shops, lamp sellers, spice stalls, carpet merchants, and ceramic vendors all negotiate in cash. Some higher-end Medina boutiques (concept stores near Dar el Bacha and Mouassine) accept cards, but the traditional souks do not. Bring MAD 300–1,000 depending on how much shopping you plan. Bargaining is mandatory.

Cash recommended

Jemaa el-Fna

Marrakech's famous main square is a cash experience. The food stalls that set up each evening (grilled meats, snail soup, harira, fresh juice) are all cash. Orange juice vendors charge MAD 5–10 per glass (cash). The snake charmers, henna artists, and musicians who approach you expect cash tips (MAD 10–20). The surrounding cafes with terrace views (Café de France, Café Argana) accept cards at some but cash is safer.

High card acceptance

Gueliz (Ville Nouvelle)

The modern French-built district outside the Medina walls. Restaurants along Avenue Mohammed V and Rue de la Liberté accept cards. Carrefour supermarket accepts contactless. Cafes, ice cream shops, and international restaurants in Gueliz are card-friendly. This is where you go when you want a break from the cash-only Medina. The Marjorelle Garden (MAD 150 entry) accepts cards.

Mixed acceptance

Riads (Traditional Guesthouses)

Riads vary. Upscale riads accept cards for room bookings. Many smaller, family-run riads prefer cash for payment (euros, dirhams, or sometimes USD). Check with your riad before arriving. Even riads that accept cards may add a 3–5% surcharge for card payments. Riad restaurant meals and spa treatments are often cash-preferred. Confirm the payment method when you book.

High card acceptance

La Palmeraie & Resort Hotels

The luxury resort area north of the city. Royal Mansour, Amanjena, Four Seasons, and the golf courses all accept cards. Pool bars, restaurants, and spa treatments at these properties are card-friendly. This is the one area of Marrakech where you can go entirely cashless. Taxi to/from the Palmeraie is MAD 60–100 (cash).

Cash recommended

Mellah & Kasbah

The old Jewish Quarter and the Kasbah area near the Saadian Tombs. The Saadian Tombs entry is MAD 70 (cash at the window). El Badi Palace is MAD 70 (cash). Bahia Palace is MAD 70 (cash). The restaurants and shops in this area are mostly cash. The spice market near the Mellah is entirely cash. Bring MAD 200–300 for sightseeing in this area.

Souk Bargaining Guide

How Bargaining Works

Bargaining is expected and enjoyed by both parties. Start at 30–40% of the asking price and work toward 50–60%. The vendor will act offended; you will act shocked. This is theater. Walk away if the price does not work for you, and the vendor will often call you back with a lower offer. Never start bargaining unless you intend to buy. Cash is the only currency of the souks. Have a rough idea of what you want to pay before entering a shop.

Common Souk Prices (After Bargaining)

Leather bag: MAD 200–500 ($20–50). Moroccan lamp: MAD 150–400 ($15–40). Ceramic tagine (decorative): MAD 80–200 ($8–20). Babouche slippers: MAD 80–150 ($8–15). Argan oil (small bottle): MAD 50–100 ($5–10). Spices (per bag): MAD 20–50 ($2–5). Carpet: MAD 500–3,000+ ($50–300+) depending on size, material, and quality.

ATMs & Exchange

ATMs

Attijariwafa Bank and BMCE ATMs are the most reliable for foreign cards. Found near Jemaa el-Fna (multiple ATMs along the edges of the square), on Avenue Mohammed V in Gueliz, and at the airport. Maximum withdrawal is typically MAD 2,000–4,000 ($200–400). Most Moroccan ATMs do not charge operator fees. Cover your PIN, as ATM skimming occurs.

Exchange

Bureaux de change in Gueliz on Avenue Mohammed V offer the best rates. The exchange shops near Jemaa el-Fna are convenient but slightly worse. The airport exchange is reasonable for Morocco. The Moroccan dirham is a semi-closed currency (you cannot buy it outside Morocco), so exchange on arrival or use ATMs. You can exchange leftover dirhams back to euros at the airport before departure.

Paying for Transport

Petit Taxis

Small beige taxis within the city. They have meters but drivers frequently refuse to use them for tourists. Negotiate the fare before getting in. A ride within the Medina or from the Medina to Gueliz should cost MAD 20–40 ($2–4). After midnight, fares increase 50%. Taxis are cash only. Maximum 3 passengers per petit taxi.

Ride-Hailing

InDriver works in Marrakech and lets you set your own price. Drivers accept or counter. This eliminates the negotiation dance with taxi drivers. Cash payment through the app or in person. Careem (owned by Uber) also operates. Both are useful for avoiding the common tourist overcharge on taxi fares.

Airport to City

Menara Airport (RAK) is 15 minutes from the Medina. Petit taxis from the airport rank cost MAD 70–100 ($7–10, negotiate before getting in, cash). Airport bus 19 runs to Jemaa el-Fna for MAD 30 ($3, cash). Many riads offer airport pickup for MAD 100–150 ($10–15). InDriver from the airport costs MAD 50–80.

Tipping in Marrakech

Marrakech Tipping

Restaurants: MAD 10–20 ($1–2) at casual places. 10% at upscale restaurants if no service charge.

Riad staff: MAD 20–50 ($2–5) per day for housekeeping. MAD 50–100 for exceptional service from the riad manager.

Tour guides: MAD 100–200 ($10–20) per person for a full-day tour. Medina walking guides: MAD 50–100.

Hammam attendants: MAD 20–50 ($2–5) on top of the hammam fee.

Unsolicited "help": people who offer directions, "guide" you through the Medina, or "help" you find a shop will expect MAD 10–20. This is a common Marrakech dynamic. Politely decline if you do not want the help.

Day Trips from Marrakech

Atlas Mountains / Imlil (1.5 hours by car)
