Do You Need Cash in Salzburg?

Some. Austria is more card-friendly than neighboring Germany, but Salzburg still has a noticeable cash culture. Restaurants, hotels, museums, and major attractions accept cards. However, traditional beer gardens, Grünmarkt (green market) stalls, some smaller cafes, and the famous Christmas markets lean heavily toward cash. Carry €20–40 per day.

Where You Will Need Cash

Grünmarkt (the daily market at Universitätsplatz, most vendors cash-only). Christmas markets (Glühwein, roasted chestnuts, Bratwurst, handicrafts). Beer gardens (Augustiner Bräustiftung, the city's famous monastery brewery, is cash-only). Some traditional cafes for smaller purchases. Bus tickets from the driver (€2.60, cash only). Street musicians and buskers. Public restrooms (€0.50). Tipping (always in cash).

Where Cards Work Fine

Hotels at all levels. Restaurants throughout the Altstadt and Neustadt. All major attractions (Festung Hohensalzburg, Mozart's Birthplace, Salzburg Museum, Hellbrunn Palace). Shops along Getreidegasse and Linzer Gasse. Supermarkets (Spar, Billa, Hofer). Sound of Music tour operators. Salzburg Card offices. Compared to Vienna, Salzburg has similar card coverage but a stronger traditional cash culture in the Altstadt's older establishments.

Paying by Card in Salzburg

Visa and Mastercard work at businesses with terminals. Contactless tap-to-pay is widely accepted. Austria uses the same domestic Bankomat system as its banking network, but international Visa/Mastercard work fine at ATMs and terminals. Amex is accepted at hotels and some upscale restaurants but rarely elsewhere.

High card acceptance

Altstadt (Old Town, Left Bank)

Salzburg's UNESCO-listed old town has excellent card infrastructure for tourists. Getreidegasse (the famous shopping street, Mozart's birthplace at No. 9) has shops and restaurants that accept cards. Mozart's Birthplace (€12, card accepted). Dom (Cathedral) and Residenz (€13, card accepted). Festung Hohensalzburg funicular and fortress (€13.70, card accepted). Restaurants around Alter Markt and Kapitelplatz accept cards.

Mixed acceptance

Universitätsplatz & Grünmarkt

The daily Grünmarkt (green market) at Universitätsplatz is Salzburg's best outdoor market. Vendors selling cheese, bread, sausage, flowers, and produce are mostly cash-only. A few larger stalls have card terminals. The surrounding restaurants and the Stiftsbezirk (monastery quarter) accept cards. St. Peter's Stiftskulinarium (one of Europe's oldest restaurants, card accepted) is nearby. Bring €15–25 for market shopping.

High card acceptance

Neustadt (Right Bank) & Mirabell

The newer part of town across the Salzach river. Mirabell Palace and gardens (free). Linzer Gasse (the right bank's main shopping street) has shops and restaurants that accept cards. Mozart's Wohnhaus (residence, €12, card accepted). Hotels along the river accept cards. The area around Makartplatz has cafes and restaurants with card terminals. Tour operators on Mirabellplatz accept cards.

Limited acceptance

Augustiner Bräustiftung (Mülln)

Salzburg's most famous beer hall, the Augustiner Bräu brewery in the Mülln neighborhood, is a cash-only institution. You buy beer at the counter (0.5L €4, 1L €6.50) and food from the small stalls in the courtyard (cold cuts, cheese, pretzels, €3–8). The beer garden seats 1,400 people. This is an essential Salzburg experience. Bring €15–25 per person.

High card acceptance

Nonntal & Leopoldskron

The southern neighborhoods below the fortress. Stift Nonnberg (abbey, free entry) is a Sound of Music filming location. The area around Schloss Leopoldskron (the lakeside palace from the film) has restaurants and hotels that accept cards. The Salzburg Marionette Theatre (€20–35, card accepted) is in this area. A quieter part of the city with good card acceptance at sit-down establishments.

The Salzburg Card: Worth the Price?

The Salzburg Card is one of the best city cards in Europe. It includes free entry to all major attractions, unlimited public transport, and river cruises.

What It Costs and What It Includes

24 hours: €30. 48 hours: €39. 72 hours: €45. Includes: Festung Hohensalzburg (€13.70 value), Mozart's Birthplace (€12), Mozart's Residence (€12), Salzburg Museum (€9), Hellbrunn Palace (€13.50), Salzburg Zoo (€14), unlimited bus travel, river cruise, and more. The card pays for itself in 2–3 attractions. Buy at tourist offices on Mozartplatz and at the Hauptbahnhof, or online (card accepted). Children's cards are roughly half price.

ATMs in Salzburg

For Austria-wide ATM advice and DCC warnings, see the Austria guide.

Look for these logos. Austrian bank ATMs offer fair-rate withdrawals for foreign cards.

Erste BankErste Bank
RaiffeisenRaiffeisen
BAWAGBAWAG

ATM Locations

Getreidegasse: Banks along the main shopping street. Alter Markt / Residenzplatz: ATMs near the tourist core. Linzer Gasse: Banks on the right bank. Hauptbahnhof (main station): ATMs inside the station. Mirabellplatz: Banks nearby. Salzburg is compact and ATMs are never more than a 5-minute walk in the center.

⚠ Avoid Euronet ATMs

Euronet ATMs near Mozartplatz and the Altstadt charge high fees and aggressively push DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion). Always use Austrian bank ATMs (Erste Bank, Raiffeisen, BAWAG, Salzburger Sparkasse). Always decline DCC and choose to be charged in euros, letting your own bank handle the conversion.

Paying for Buses, Funiculars & Taxis

Salzburg's bus system (Salzburg AG) covers the city and surrounding areas. A single ticket costs €2.20 (at machines or Tabak-Trafik shops, card accepted) or €2.60 from the bus driver (cash only, exact change preferred). A 24-hour pass costs €5.80. Taxis & Transfers

Salzburg taxis are metered. Hauptbahnhof to Altstadt: €10–15. Airport to city center: €18–25 (20 minutes). Taxis accept cards. Uber is not widely available in Salzburg. The Bus 2 from the airport to the Hauptbahnhof costs €2.20 (20 minutes, card at machine). The airport bus is the cheapest option.

Tipping in Salzburg

The Austria guide covers Austrian tipping norms. Salzburg follows the same rules. Round up by 5–10% at restaurants. Tell the server the total you want to pay when settling the bill. Tip in cash, even if paying by card. At the Augustiner Bräu, rounding up at the beer counter is common. Tour guides: €3–5 per person for walking tours, €5–10 for full-day Sound of Music tours. Taxi drivers: round up by €1–2.
