💰 Quick Context: The Malawian Kwacha
Malawi uses the Malawian Kwacha (MWK / MK). The rate fluctuates around 1,700–1,750 MWK per 1 USD. Quick mental math: divide kwacha by 1,700 for USD, so MK17,000 is roughly $10. The largest banknote is MK5,000 (~$2.90), meaning you will carry thick stacks of bills for larger purchases. Malawi is known as the "Warm Heart of Africa" for its friendly people, and it is one of the best-value destinations in East/Southern Africa. Lake Malawi (a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching 580 km) is the main draw for travelers.
🎧 Order US Dollars Before You Fly
Bring USD to exchange for kwacha. Many lodges quote in dollars.
Order USD → CEI Currency ExchangeLake Malawi & the Backpacker Economy
Malawi has two distinct tourist economies. The backpacker/budget circuit (Cape Maclear, Nkhata Bay, Chitimba) runs almost entirely on kwacha cash, with dorm beds at MK5,000–MK15,000 ($2.90–$8.80) per night and meals at MK2,000–MK5,000 ($1.15–$2.90). The luxury lodge circuit (Mumbo Island, Pumulani, Kaya Mawa on Likoma Island) operates in USD, with rates of $200–$500+ per person per night, often bookable and payable by card or bank transfer.
USD Is the Tourism Currency
Safari lodges, upscale lake resorts, and tour operators quote prices in USD. Mvuu Camp in Liwonde National Park, Tongole Wilderness Lodge in Nkhotakota, and the Likoma Island lodges all price in dollars. Budget establishments (Fat Monkeys in Nkhata Bay, Gecko Lounge in Cape Maclear, Kiboko Camp in Lilongwe) price in kwacha. Carry both currencies: USD for bookings and major expenses, kwacha for daily spending.
Cash vs. Card: What to Expect in Malawi
Malawi is primarily cash-based, with card acceptance concentrated in Lilongwe and Blantyre. In Lilongwe, the Latitude 13 Hotel, Crossroads Hotel, Sunbird Lilongwe, and Shoprite/Spar supermarkets accept Visa and Mastercard. Old Town Lilongwe (the commercial center) has several exchange bureaux with competitive rates.
In Blantyre (the commercial capital), Protea Hotel, Ryalls Hotel, and Game/Shoprite supermarkets accept cards. At Lake Malawi, the picture is mixed: upscale lodges on the islands often accept cards (arrange in advance), but the lakeside backpacker lodges at Cape Maclear, Nkhata Bay, and Senga Bay are cash-only. The National Bank ATM in Monkey Bay (near Cape Maclear) is the last ATM before the lake shore, and it runs out of cash frequently during peak season (June to October).
Daily cash budget: budget travelers spending MK15,000–MK30,000 ($8.80–$17.60) per day for dorm beds, local meals, and minibus transport. Mid-range travel: MK50,000–MK100,000 ($29–$59) per day. Withdraw MK200,000–MK500,000 ($118–$294) in Lilongwe or Blantyre before heading to the lake.
How to Get Kwacha for Your Malawi Trip
Malawi is a heavily cash-based destination with a closed currency: the kwacha (MWK) cannot be ordered from US banks or exchange services before you fly. Cards work at Lilongwe upscale hotels (Latitude 13, Crossroads, Sunbird), Blantyre business hotels (Protea, Ryalls), and Shoprite/Game supermarkets in both cities. Everywhere else (Lake Malawi backpacker lodges at Cape Maclear and Nkhata Bay, Liwonde safari camps, the M1 minibus network, Mulanje hiking villages) is cash-only. The cleanest path is to bring USD cash for exchange in Lilongwe or Blantyre, then withdraw kwacha from Standard Bank or National Bank ATMs as you go.
Bring USD or GBP cash before you fly
Malawi is closed-currency, so US banks (Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo, Citi) do not stock kwacha. A currency-exchange service like CEI Currency Exchange can ship USD or GBP to a US address with insured 2–5 day delivery if you don't already have crisp bills on hand. Most travelers handle Malawi by bringing USD (preferred) or GBP in clean post-2009 bills, then exchanging at a Lilongwe or Blantyre forex bureau on landing. Malawi does not have a Bank of America Global ATM Alliance partner. The cleanest setup for a Lake Malawi or Liwonde trip: pack USD $400–$800 cash, exchange a portion at an Old Town Lilongwe forex bureau or in Blantyre's Victoria Avenue area, top up MWK from Standard Bank or National Bank ATMs, and use a Wise card at the few hotels and supermarkets that accept it.
Withdraw from a Malawian bank ATM
On the ground, the cheapest source of kwacha is a major Malawian bank ATM. Standard Bank Malawi, National Bank of Malawi, FDH Bank, and NBS Bank all give the actual interbank rate with no markup. Most charge a per-transaction operator fee (around MK5,000) for foreign cards. Withdrawal limits run roughly MK100,000–MK200,000 per transaction (about $59–$118), and your home bank may limit you to 2–3 withdrawals per day. ATMs cluster around Lilongwe (City Centre, Old Town, Area 47, Crossroads), Blantyre (Victoria Avenue, Limbe), and Mzuzu, with thinner coverage in Mangochi and Monkey Bay near the lake. The National Bank ATM in Monkey Bay frequently runs out of cash during peak season (June to October), so withdraw before heading lakeside. Decline DCC every time the screen offers "charge in USD". See the Best ATMs section below for the bank-by-bank lineup. Want to know what a Standard Bank Malawi withdrawal will actually cost on your card? Drop it into our ATM fee calculator.
Airport counters & hotel forex windows
Three traps to walk past in Malawi. The currency-exchange counter at LLW (Kamuzu International) airport advertises rates that look reasonable but routinely runs 5–10% off the interbank rate, with limited evening hours. The exchange windows inside Lilongwe and Blantyre hotel lobbies bake the markup into the rate. Honest exception worth knowing: licensed forex bureaux in Old Town Lilongwe (along Glyn Jones Road) and on Victoria Avenue in Blantyre exchange clean USD cash to MWK at competitive rates close to interbank. Stick to bank-branded ATMs at Standard Bank, National Bank, FDH, or NBS; decline DCC; and the Old Town Lilongwe and Victoria Avenue bureaux are the acceptable cash-to-cash route. Malawi does not yet have a city-specific guide on this site, but the Best ATMs section below covers the bank lineup.
